[b:51ec18cda8] I am about to use a rear axle puller to get my drivers side axle out of my 1988 cougar because the bearing is bad. Does anyone know if there is a retainer ring in the differential that has to be removed first by taking off rear end cover? Or can I just let it rip? [/b:51ec18cda8]

unless you have a 9 inch rear end you take the diff cover off unscrew the lock pin remove retainer clip and slide the axle out you can see right off if there are bolts on the cover!
