79 Cougar vaccum problem?

I not only have the answer, but it's on the house! Just give me a vote so I can see if thier counter works! I have answered a lot of questions for free...tried to join as a moderator and have heard nothing from anyone...Back to you problem, You have a vacuum cannister mounted on the firewall, or near it with 1 vacuum line going to it, this is a reserve tank so when you accelerate the vacuum is supplied to the A/C system. If it develops even a pinhole it will not hold vacuum! Change this tank and all should be well! The old steel coffee can types are the worst of em!

There are two such canisters that I know of, one inside the engine compartment, and one inside the fender. Which one am I looking at replacing? What would you recomend I replace it with?

you want to replace the one that has a single black vacuum hose...go to the junk yard and get a plastic one from a newer car...

They both have a single black vaccuum hose, the one in the engine compartment is more the size of a soup can, in the fender the size of a coffee can. What type of cars have u seen the plastic canisters in?

Well you should probably get 2 plastic ones! But the coffee can is the one with the leak. Most cars in junkyards today have round plastic balls that replace the old rust prone coffee can types.
