280 ZX. BRIGHTS ON. TAILLIGHTS OFF

On my 280 ZX the tailights go off when I turn on the brights. It is a strange thing to have happen unless someone is chasing me using my tailights as a reference! Actually, I found out about this when the police pulled me over! HELP! Thanks, Keith.55
