I have a 2005 Scion and this morning when I tried to crank the engine, the vehicle wouldn't start. It sounded as though it wanted to but there was no connection. I tried again but this time, giving a little gas while pressing down on the clutch. When I did this, I noticed a cloud of smoke in my rear view mirror. I let the car run for a moment and then turned it off. When I got back into the car, I noticed that there was no more smoke. Can you tell me what caused this to happen?

sounds like it was flooded. could be a leaking fuel injector, bad fuel pressure regulator or coolant temp sensor. there is the possibility it was coolant from a leaking head gasket.
