Hi, I have just bought a rover 25 1.4i, when I went to put some antifreeze in the the coolant I noticed that the liquid inside was A thick sludge, is this the head gasket ? If so am I able to repair without a massive cost or is there any other things that it could be ?

Flush it out good, system was probably just neglected.

Flush both the cooling system as well as the reservior. Sometimes it is easier to just pull the reservior out and clean it in a sink.
