1997 shifting without having to depress button on shifter

Yesterday, my husband was driving my truck (which doesn't happen often) down the highway at 70 miles/hour. Something happened and the engine was reving and the tach was going crazy!

I looked and he had knocked the gear shift into neutral when changing the radio station.

I tested into when I was driving very slowly and on a side street and I can indeed move the shift between gears without depressing the button.

Has anyone seen this? The Service Engine Soon light is on and returns an error indicating the transmission is shifting. However, I had taken it to the dealership and they couldn't find anything wrong. Now the light seems to come on close to the end of a gas tank and then will go off about 14 miles into the tank.
Thanks,
joan

To my knowledge all cars do that. The only time you need to push the button down is when going to and from park and reverse. You should be able and put the selector on L or 1 and up shift all the way until natural without having to push the button.

Thanks for the reply. I thought about the issue some more yesterday and realized I was probably a little gun shy because of Service Engine soon light. I really did think we were going to lose the tranny on the highway.

I think I need to teach my husband to stop messing with the radio, adjusting the heat and overall fidgeting while driving.

Thanks!
