My alternator light came on in the dash, I was told the alternator was bad, bought a new rebuilt, still same thing, tested output, its at 12.3 volts at the battery as well as at the positive output on alternator, is it possible to have purchased a rebuilt that isn't putting out also,I also removed positive battery post with van running, and it died right away

I know most alternators have to be energized to start working. This means 12v has to be applied to the alternator to make it start working. You can spin it all day but if it is not energized it will not put out.

I am not sure about the specifics on your alternator, but maybe someone else on this forum does.
