1988 Questions for all other cars V8 Two Wheel Drive

I installed a new sbc hei distributor (1 unit w/coil and elec ign.) for 350 chevy 260. I am pretty sure firing order was correct, but now realize rotor may have been in wrong position. When I tried to start. engine went "clunk" and smoke came from battery terminal like engine is locked up. Did engine lock up? What should I do?
note:The engine is on a Mercruiser out drive.

Hi Bernie,

Manually turn the engine and see if it is seized. Are you sure the distributor fits?

Valve timing correct?
