1984 El Camino transmission removal

Is there a *technical* reason why the mechanics all seem to want to replace my steering column shifter with a floor mount automatic? I am soon going from a 3-speed to 4-speed and I simply must be missing something about this (besides a little OD sticker).
The only thing I see is that the current arrangment wouldn't let me manually drop down into anything except 1st or 2nd for towing, mountain driving, etc.
At 180K original miles and 12K miles on a new 350ci small block, is there anything else that is a no-brainer to go ahead and replace while I've got the old transmission dropped?

I think people are trying to talk you into it because the od transmission shift shaft has a longer throw, this will cause everything to be off and you may not be able to get the unit into park or 1st gear so you guessed it close, you may be able to find a newer el camino column that has od and use that but its more work and may be more expensive than a floor shifter

thanks

I'm not sure what was meant by "throwing everything off" in terms of OD (in this case the 700R4). From the consumer's point of view. Now that is has been switched out, is that the reason why 85mph shows as 60mph?
