Why would a spark plug begin to misfire when the plug lead is fully inserted onto the plug. If the lead is held away from the plug, so that the spark can be seen, the plug fires normally. Once the lead is connected as it should be, the plug stops firing.

It could be a cracked electrode inside the plug making it so it shorts out.
