My friend gave me this car because after her son fixed her air conditioner the reverse stopped working. All the other gears work fine but when it's put in reverse it won't move when you push on the gas. Weve checked the fuses. What could be the problem

Hi Lana,

Did the problem just happen after the A/C was fixed? If so, do me a favor. When you shift from gear to gear, let me know if the indicator is showing the correct gear. I'm wondering if something may have happened with the shift linkage, wiring to the range sensor, or something other has happened.

Also, do you know if the work to the A/C was done under the hood or did he work in the vehicle under the dash?

One last thought. There are solenoids switches, sensors and so on that can cause this. We may have to have the computer scanned for diagnostic trouble codes that will point us in the right direction. Here is a quick video showing how it's done:

I realize most people don't own a scanner, but often times a parts store will lend or rent one to you. Usually, they will do it for you free of charge, but I don't think you're driving it. LOL

One last thought. Make sure the fluid is clean and full. Here are directions on how to check it. The attached pic correlates with these directions.

TRANSAXLE FLUID LEVEL CHECKING PROCEDURE
IMPORTANT: If transaxle is hot, allow sufficient time to cool before checking fluid level.

It is not necessary to check fluid level unless fluid has been changed or a leak is suspected.

Pic 1

1. Park vehicle on level ground with engine off.
2. Flip the handle up and then pull out the oil level indicator (dipstick). Wipe the oil level indicator off with a clean rag or paper towel.

3. Push the oil level indicator back in all the way and then remove it.
4. Check both sides of the oil level indicator, and read the lower level. The fluid level must be in the cross-hatched area.
5. If the fluid level is in the cross-hatched area on the oil level indicator, then push the oil level indicator back in all the way and flip down the handle to lock it in place. If the fluid level is below the "ADD" mark, then add only enough Saturn Transaxle Fluid to bring the fluid level up to the middle of the cross-hatched area on the oil level indicator.

Let me know as much as you can find out about what was repaired with the A/C.

Take care,
Joe
