I just noticed today that I had a smell in my car coming from the air vents. It smells like what I would consider to be an exhaust smell. It didn’t smell bad when I first drove it across town. But after parking and coming out of the store and going home, I noticed the smell. Got worse the closer you got to the air vent. If you turn the AC off the smells goes away.

Hello,

Can I ask if the engine ahs an exhaust leak? IF so this will cause the issue. Next, it can be the engine valve cover leaking and you are smelling oil burning. But I did notice this car has a cabin filter that might need to be changed, it is behind the glove box. I would use a flashlight to check for oil leaks at the valve covers if you do not have an exhaust leak. Also, check for engine oil on the ground where you park the car, this will be a clue as well.

Thank you so much for getting back with me! I don’t know if I have a leak, I don’t see oil leaking from where I’ve parked, however, the cabin air filter was changed two days ago… could that be the reason for the smell? I have a baby and I’m trying to see if it’s safe to continue to drive? The old cabin filter was filthy and had a bunch of trash, but it was cleaned before putting in the new one.

Hmmm good question, the new filter might have a smell. I would try removing it and see if the smell goes away. Also, lets check the fuel injectors for leakage which is common as well, use a flashlight to check for fuel wetness at the fuel rail and injectors. Also, if you cannot find the issue please take the car into a shop and have it inspected. Here is the injector set up for both 4 and 6 cylinder engines.
