Air conditioner not getting cold

Air conditioner not getting cold. When trying to add Freon the gauge on can went to yellow/red. What could be the problem?

The gauge may belling you it is empty and was compressor running or not. if compressor does not work then it will not load any Freon. But keep in mind that Freon may not be the problem. See link.
