Hi, I just recently bought a 1996 acura tl from an elderly women. After purchasing the vehicle I took it for an oil change and they told me I had a minor main seal leak.

My main question is it leaking motor oil or transmission fluid? I'd appreciate any input on this matter and would definately donate a little if my problem can be help or assisted in any ways.

Thanks a tons in advance,
JimmyL

`Hi there,

I would be thinking that they are referring to the rear main engine oil seal, normally you would refer to transmission seals as the input shaft seal or the drive shaft seals, as these are the two main seals that will leak, there is also a front seal on the engine, this is normally referred to as a front crankshaft seal. If it is a rear main seal, the transmission will have to be removed to access this seal.

They did spoke about dropping transmission to get to it. So I assume its exactly what you predicted from the very start.

If the rear main seal is leaking. What type of fluid is it? So I can add it every now and than until I can afford to fully repair the leak.

Thanks

The rear main is the engine oil, just keep an eye on the oil level, check the invoice of your last service to see what oil they used.
