Electrical problem
2000 Acura RL 6 cyl Automatic 128000 miles

1)When I put the key in and turn, sometimes it takes three or four attempts before it "catches" and starts. Otherwise it just clicks and nothing happens. The dash lights come on normally and it goes through the diagnostics properly. I think the battery is about two years old.

2)Also, the security system appears to work intermittently.
Sometimes you can arm and disarm the alarm from the keychain, other times you can't. A new battery (in the keychain) doesn't have an effect.

Do I have an overall electrical problem or are these two distinct problems? Number 1 is clearly the more worrisome.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hi AndreH,

The clicking noise when ignition is turned to crank starter indicates a possible fault with the starter. When problem occurs, give the starter motor some knocks with the aid of a mallet or anything that can judder it and test. If starter cranks after this, it is failing and would have to be replaced.

Check contacts of the remote battery. Quite often contamination and looseness of the contact would cause intermittent malfunctioning. When problem occurs, try hitting the remote into your palsma few times and check if it works. If your remote is equipped with a LED, ensure it is lit when the button is depressed. If the LED does not show, it would indicate bad battery contacts.

That makes sense. The other thing I thought about was the ignition switch. Any possibilities there?

That brings me to my follow-up question: How much is a new starter for a 2000 Acura 3.5RL and where is it located in the engine?

Thank you.

The starter is listed at $277.32 in our database. The replacement labor time is 4.6 hours.

Starter is under the manifolds and attached to the transmission. You would need to get under the vehicle to be able to see it.

It is possible for the ignition switch to be the cause but if it is the cause, there would be no clicking noise, it would just feel as if you did not turn the key.
