Gear shift

My gear shift on my '91 Acura Legend won't work unless I use the manual overide; is it a fuse that I need to replace or is it something major?

When you put on the brake the solenoid should trip the release for the transmission shifter. Either the switch on the brake is bad or the solenoid in the shifter.
