why when i have my car in park, does it start reving up and down to about 2 rpms, and why whenever i put it in gear does it make a clank noise

Hi fallen1991,
When the idling speed is too high, due to vacumn leakage or idle speed out of adjustment, the engine would surge when idling in Neutral or Park.
The clanking could be due to excessive shocl from the erratic idling or something on the drive train is loose or has excessive clearance. You need to verify where the noise is coming from.
