My car seems to vibrate and shake when I reach speeds between 40-50 mph. It goes away if I let off the gas. Does this seem like a alignment problem or an engine problem. I read somewhere where it could be the motor mount. How much does something like that cost?

First step to do is eliminate the wheels being an issue. It may be a dynamic imbalance (you must balance the wheel again) or the tires may be bad.

it sounds like a motor mount to me. but it could be a number of things. i cant see it being the wheels when you let of the gas and it stops. check out rockauto.com they usually have some pretty good prices on stuff and gives you lots of manufactures to comepare to.

Shakes or Wobbles problem
1989 Acura Integra 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 265000 miles

Just put struts on, 4 new tires and front end aligned, alignment was off 1 15/16 inches on passenger side. For the most part car rides smooth but will shake bad every once in awhile, especially accelerating on an incline....

Do you mean the toe was off 1 5/16" or camber was off 1 5/16 degrees? The only way toe could be off that much is if a tie rod end was replaced. Otherwise the tires would have been smoking off from scrubbing going down the road. You can't infer anything about camber because it will change simply from replacing the struts.

If wear had taken place in one of the inner cv joints, readjusting camber during the alignment could put the rollers in a different spot inside the housing. The rollers need to roll smoothly to allow the shaft to change angle and length as the suspension goes up and down. When the rollers bind on the wear spots, the shaft pushes on the steering knuckle, lower control am, and steering linkage. You will feel the vibration in the steering wheel and the binding is most noticeable when under acceleration due to the pressure on the rollers.

It's important to understand that if cv joint wear is the cause of the vibration, the alighnment did not CAUSE the problem. Moving parts to new positions due to making the adjustment just allowed to wear to become noticeable.

To verify this is the problem, drive out of a road or parking lot where you can turn sharp right and accelerate normally. This causes the shaft to go through the biggest angle and length changes. If the vibration is worst until you let off the gas, suspect one of the two inner cv joint housings.

Most people replace the entire half shaft because they are so inexpensive now, but I have a procedure to inspect them if you want to take them apart.

You have an engine mis-fire going on.

A few things to look at:
-secondary ignition components (wires, plugs, cap, rotor, coil
-vacuum leaks
-faulty injectors
-compression.

Hi slall,

What is the idling speed?
Does it shake more when gear is engaged?
Any difference if D or R is used?

Engine Mechanical problem
1993 Acura Integra 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 99.000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
My question relates to the car when idling or stopped in a stop sign. The car shakes in the front like the dash is moving. I asked the previous owner and she told me that the timing is advanced a bit high. What can I do to correct it and how? I don't have much money to bring it in to a dealer or shop. Can you help me?

Hi bigshow27,

If the ignition is advanced, you need a timing light to reset it back.

If there is bad vibrations during idling, I suspect it is the engine mounts that are bad.

If the idling speed is between 720 to 820 rpm, then it is within specs.
