1995 Acura Integra Overheating and surging

This morning my I noticed my car sounding "different". After less than a mile I was it was starting overheat and my rmp needle was surging from 1000 to just over 2000 constantly. Less than 2 months ago the thermostat was replaced, and 2 weeks ago I had to have a new distribuitor put in. What could this be? A head gasket issue? Maybe something else? I am at a loss.

Often the two, coolant and surging of the engine are connected. Check the coolant level to make sure it is at the proper level. View it in the overflow container. Then with the engine warm purge the air from the system by cracking open the bleeder on the cooling system. Get the air out of the system. It is a closed system that should have about 11 pounds of pressure that builds up. By purging the air from the system you can eliminate bubbles that can set over various sensors and cause them to send bad signals to the computer which then overcompensates and causes the surging.
