Rattling noise passenger side under the hood, smoking and the A/C stopped working, is the A/C compressor the issue?

My wife and I have the vehicle listed above that we love because of the size for us and our daughter. However, it's had a few problems here and there. Recently, I heard a rattling noise coming from the passenger side under the hood. Two days ago, as we were driving down the road, the car started smoking underneath the hood. I pulled over, opened the hood, let it cool. Afterwards, no A/C in the car. So, my question now is, does this sound like an A/C compressor problem? Maybe it's been blown? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am just looking for answers at the moment before taking it into the shop. Maybe I could be able to fix it myself, as pricing for mechanics these days are rather high. Thank you!

It sounds like the A/C compressor has let go but I noticed it is on the driver's side of the engine. Do you hear the noise will the A/C is off? If not, the compressor is probably the culprit.

This generic guide and video will help you see what you are in for when doing the job which you will need to run to the auto parts store for to rent a gauge set and vacuum pump. I have included the location and instructions for your car in the images below.

I would get a new compressor they are about $40.00 more but well worth it ($198.00)

Compressor, R&R 1.6 Hours shop time.
Does Not Include: Refrigerant Recovery or Evacuate and Recharge A/C System

Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what happens.
