A/C not blowing after an hour?

For the last several years, when taking an extended car trip after some time the air stops coming through the vents. You can clearly hear the blower running and if you put your hand up to the vent, you can slightly feel the cold air, but it’s not coming through. This used to happen after about 3 hours of driving, but now it happens after 1 hour.

I have had an actuator replaced which didn’t solve the problem, but the clicking when turning on the A/C stopped! I’ve also had the A/C checked several times and each time all checks out okay. They tell me they can’t fix what’s not broken. Recently they checked it again and said it was low on coolant, which is the first time that has happened, but I still have the issue.

I have figured out when it happens, I keep the blower on and turn off the A/C and after 5 minutes turn it back on and it blows through the vents again.

What’s the problem? Two different mechanics charge me to check it and can’t fix it. Help!

Hi,

By chance, did they replace the mode door actuator or was it the blend door actuator? I ask because it sounds like the airflow direction is what is changing.

The clicking you mentioned was likely from a blend air door actuator and not the mode door. By chance, do you have the receipt from the repair to confirm which actuator was replaced?

Also, has the cabin air filter been replaced? It can restrict air flow if clogged.

Let me know.

Joe

Hi Joe.

I replaced the cabin air filter a year ago. The problem persisted after that. As for the actuator, I looked through my receipts and I don’t have that one. If it helps, it sounded like the clicking came from the passenger side above the glove box in the dashboard. Of course, the clicking stopped after it was replaced.

Hi,

What I suggest is to remove the mode door actuator and see if it responds when you change the airflow direction. I suspect the door is moving from calibration and trying to distribute airflow in all directions. That's a theory, but in my mind, it makes sense.

The next time it happens, see if it seems like air is coming in multiple directions. If it is, then replace the actuator.

I attached the directions below.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe
