I have an ABS module that I tried to have rebuilt but was told it’s unrepairable because of software issues. I found a used one from the exact same car and wanted to know if swapping it out will still allow the breaks to function. 2009 dodge grand caravan. I understand there will be a VIN mismatch so the ABS will not be functional but if everything else is working it should be able to get me from point a to be until Dodge gets a new one or I arrange to purchase a new vehicle. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

If the module isn't working, you should still have brakes. Could you explain what is happening?

As far as a VIN mismatch is concerned, I'm not sure that is a concern. However, when the module is replaced, you need to do an automated bleed which requires communication with the module. However, it should work.

I attached pics below showing the procedure.

Let me know.

Take care,

Joe

Sorry for the delay, I was out of town. I do still have brakes, but the speedometer has quit working and it’s starting to affect the transmission which isn’t getting any speed signal from the wheels. I have sent the ABS module to be “repaired” and the tech said it’s unrepairable as the software is slowly fouling up hence the issues becoming more apparent. I found a comparable ABS module and pump from same vehicle that has been tested fine but I’m not sure the VIN can be rewritten. I’m okay with driving with the ABS in safety mode as long as the software works and everything else is functioning.

So, my question is if the only issue afterwards is a VIN mismatch that will keep the ABS traction and brake light put on, but the software and pump are okay, will it function with just non-anti-lock brakes? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

That is correct. Once installed and bled, if you can't program the module to function, you should still have non-ABS brakes.

Have you checked online for a remanufactured one? There are a lot of sites that sell them. They program them to your VIN and when you get them, they are plug-and-play.

Let me know how things work out for you.

Take care,

Joe
