A/C compressor not working?

2004 CHRYSLER PACIFICA

Hello, my serpentine belt broke and I was told my A/C pulley was locked and was told I could just bypass the pulley with a shorter belt. Now the people at the parts store said I need to remove the whole compressor, what is the true procedure.

It looks like all you need is a shorter belt here is a diagram to help you see what needs to be done. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.

Thank you. 81 1/8 is too short but 82 works wonders and car runs smoother.
