the clutch doesn't engage when i turn the A/C ~ Heat dial to A/C. i'm looking for somewhere, other than on my back, to test the circuit with my ohm/volt meter.

You should be able to bypass the A/C clutch relay and get it engaged. The relay is in the fuse panel under the hood; here are the A/C clutch coil wiring diagrams as requested. Make sure the test fuse #11 under the hood as well. Check out the images (below). Let us know how it goes.

okay, the clutch coil is open, thanks for the diagram. i ended up under the car after all, just to make sure there wasn't a broken wire.
next question, is it possible to change the clutch without opening the refrigerant line?

You may be able to replace the clutch coil if there is room, the book says you will need to remove the compressor FYI.

This video should help you:

that video, (How to Vacuum Down and Recharge Your A/C System), doesn't address the mechanics of removing the clutch Ken, but thank you for your response. early on in my career i did some Heating and Air, before it became illegal to vent freon into the atmosphere, and it is for this reason that i'll take it to a shop if i can't change the clutch without opening the lines. If the clutch is held in place by a snap ring and nothing else i reckon i'll give it a shot. thanks again.

Yep, take it to a shop like the video says if you can't get the clutch off with the compressor still in the car.
