First, make sure the cooling fan is turning on with the AC. Also, confirm there is no blockage to the front of the radiator. If that is all good, check to make sure the AC belt is tight.
Next, if everything checks good, you may simply be low on Freon. Here are a few links that will help you recharge it as well as do some basic testing. Here is a link that explains how to charge the system:

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions. Also, the last answer is somewhat correct. At an idle, the temperature may not be as cold, but it should remain somewhat cold.
