I have the wagon model and it drove fine for weeks when I first got it. It has 304,000 miles and it drives like a champ, but ever since it started getting cold in the mornings because fall is near my car has started to rise in temperature for a couple of miles and then go back down to medium range then it would rise again and drop again. So automatically I though thermostat replacement which I did and it drove okay for a day and now after about five minutes of driving it runs hot and does not drop back down. I do not know why it does not do that anymore it just stay right below the H on my dash. It does not run completely hot like there is no smoke coming from hinder the hood coolant is not spitting out from under the cap. And I have no leaks!
What else can I do? I have ran head gasket test cranked it while cool and full of coolant without the cap on and it did not spew out. My oil nor coolant look milky. So
I think it may be a clogged hose or seal somewhere in the coolant systems route
or bad water pump. Could some one give me some tips on what to do next? This is my only car and I cannot keep bumming rides to work. Please help.
Thank you,
Tim

Is the cooling fan running when it is getting hot? If not, then I would suspect a bad coolant temperature sensor (that is what the computer uses to know when to turn the fan on). Also, make sure there is not dirt/dust/crud clogging up the A/C condenser (the thing in front of the radiator). If air cannot get through there, then the car will over heat. If it is clogged and dirty looking, spray it down with the water hose.

Run a coolant pressure test and a combustion gas test on it. Subaru's are bad for leaking head gaskets and this could be the start of one failing. If the cooling system will not hold pressure it is the most likely suspect.

I think I'm losing pressure. I just don't know where. I saw a video where a head gasket was bad and they were losing pressure (air) was coming out from behind one of the spark plugs. Anything I can do to fix this, besides replace the head gasket?

Run a combustion gas test to see if it's getting engine gases through the cooling system. If you are it's gaskets. If not you could have a leak in the heater core.

I would also pull the spark plugs and look at them, if coolant is getting into a cylinder the plug will be VERY clean compared to the others, another thing would be to buy one of the micro cameras they have for smartphones or tablets and look into the cylinders. If you see 3 cylinders that are dark and carboned and one that looks squeaky clean it's getting steam cleaned.
I would do every check possible...
