Wont shift in less you pull it down and shift it yourself?

We just changed the transmission and the new one takes gear great and dont slip but wont shift in less you pull it down and shift it yourself what could be the problem dose it have to be flashed or what its in a 2002 ford explorer with the 5r55w transmission

I suspect you replaced this with a used transmission. If that is the case, then this is a different issue most likely due to fluid or an issue in the valve body of this replacement transmission.

This means we need to start by checking the fluid and see if it is full. Here is a guide that will help with this:

If the fluid is okay, then I would suggest moving onto the shift cable and make sure that the manual valve is in the correct location when you have it in drive.

I attached the info below for this. Please run through this process and let us know what you find with this.

If this is ok as well then unfortunately, we are going to have to start tearing down this replacement unit to see what is wrong with it.
