I have the push button 4x4 controls. When I select auto, 4 high or 4 low all of the indicator lights work. You can hear the actuator working and it feels like it is engaging but for some reason the hubs are not locking in and getting no power to any of my other wheels.

Hi,

There is an electric actuator on the front axle that may not be working. What I suggest is to remove it and then have a helper shift to 4wd while you watch if it is working.

Here are the directions for replacement. You can use them for removal and install for testing. The attached pics correlate with the directions.

1. Apply sealant (GM P/N 12346004 or equivalent) to the threads of the electric motor actuator.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Install the electric motor actuator (3).
Tighten the actuator to 20 Nm (15 ft. Lbs.).
3. Connect the electrical connector to the actuator.

Thank you very much for your input. I will take your advice and see if that works. It will be this weekend before I have a chance to work on it. Again thank you for your input, I'll let you know how it turns out.

Hey Joe, this is John, beamanjpb3. I finally got the time to work on my truck. Turns out that the actuator motor is working fine. I'm guessing that my issue must be worse than I thought, probably something inside the transfer case. Do you have any more suggestions or info that might help me out?

John,

When you shift, you indicated hearing the actuator. Does it sound like it always has? The actuator may not be working. Also, was there any noise that could be indicating an internal problem? Unless these transfer cases are abused, they usually hold up really well.

Let me know.

Take care and God Bless,

Joe

I removed the actuator motor like you suggested. I then plugged it back in. My daughter came outside to help me, she pushed the 4x4 buttons on the dash when I asked her to. I was under the truck and could see that the actuator motor was working. It seems like it is working like it is supposed to. With everything hooked up and together, I can hear some like clunking noise when I select 4 high and or 4 low. The noise doesn't sound real loud or anything, I just assumed it was supposed to sound like that when the differential is shifting. I did notice a little bit of really fine metallic particles in the gear oil when I removed one of the bolts during disassembly.

At this point, the only thing I can think of is to pull the actuator and see if it is moving. You may hear it trying, but it may not be actually working properly. The idea that the front axle locks in points back to the transfer case. If there is nothing making noise when driving, I don't think it's internal. That leaves the actuator.
