4lo blinking, engine light on and excessive black smoke from the exhaust

My car has excessive dark smoke coming out of the exhaust. The acceleration is normal. The car runs normal. Recently the 4lo started blinking with the check engine light on. The car does not accelerate well when this sign comes on. What could be the problem?

It sounds like you might have be having a few different possible issues. The check engine light being on means there is a fault code or codes stored in your car's computer and we need to know what they are. here is a tutorial showing how to retrieve fault codes from your vehicle:
