This system a variable valve system. I imagine he found metal on the screen in the oil control valve (#3/4). If so, then yes the metal is most likely coming from the bearings. This will "clog" your phasers which is what moves the cam properly. When this happens you do lose power but I didn't think of it because it normally is not the drastic that quickly. Normally it gets a little worse until the point that the check engine light comes on and this is what brings you in, not the loss of power complaint.
It is a little odd but if that is what he found, then he is correct about this being a precursor to an engine failure because the metal doesn't "regrow."
Hopefully he didn't find too much metal and replacing this will get you squared away without an engine replacement. Let me know if you need anything else. Thanks
