Four wheel drive engaging sometimes making sharp turns in parking lots?

It sounds like the return mechanism has gone weak in the transfer case mode actuator, but to be sure let's unplug the actuator and see if it still does it. Here is the location and how to change it out in case you need it. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.
