I am currently building my 302 engine. If I am going with a b303 cam, am I able to use stock length lifters and stock length pushrods?
They are new so I won’t be using the old parts.
I am running summit racing cylinder head's part #SUM-162SBF185WIN
and using trick flow rocker arms TFS-51400510.

Thank you, Ryan! You have been a great help for my first build. One last question, am I able to use the same torque sequence you used for installing your cylinder heads? I’m using arp bolts.

No problem! Thanks for watching!

So, your torque sheet on that is right here https://tech.arp-bolts.com/instructions/154-4201.pdf

3 equal stages up to 80 ft lbs. Then the sequence will be in the paperwork that came with your heads. I believe it is the same sequence as the heads we used but I do not know for sure so, double check with your documentation.

Best,
Ryan

I have the same exact paper which shows 80lbs So does that mean I have to torque same bolts to 80foot pounds 3x?? Or go from 20ftlbs 70foot pounds till I get to 80.?

That just means you need to do 3 rounds of torquing. So just do like a round of 26 then 52 then 80 all in sequence.

You are trying to bring the head down onto the block as evenly as possible.

Hope this helps!

Hey Ryan, quick question is there supposed to be a gap between the oil pan and the oil filter tube? I installed a high flow oil pump and new oil tube but I’m getting a small gap in between.

Hey there!

Yeah, those roller lifters will work great for your setup! Just soak them in oil for 24 hours before installing. As for the pushrods, I would just get the stock length. But I think those heads have pushrod guides so you will need a hardened pushrod or else the guide plates will eat the pushrod away.

Hope that helps!

Best,
Ryan

Do I need to put the lifters in a seal container, or can I leave the container open?
So, for the pushrods is there a specific pushrod I need to get.? Or is there any chance you can help me find the correct ones I need to order?

I just used a stainless-steel bowl, so open is just fine.

Just make sure they are hardened, they are pretty common. Most are these days but some are not so you just have to double check it.

Best,
Ryan

Hey Ryan, question for my arp bolts I only got qty of 10 step washers that I installed in the bottom, I was wondering if the step washers only go on the bottom. Or do I need to install them for all 20 holes?

Hey there!

So, it looks like you got sent the wrong stud kit. The kit you have there is for a Ford but for an inline 6 application.

Here is the link for that:

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/arp-152-4201

What you need is this kit that has 1/2 inch to 7/16 inch reducers because you have high performance aftermarket heads. I ran into the same problem with my AFR heads on my build. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/arp-154-4005/make/ford

So, return that first kit and order the second one.

For the clearance on the pickup .250 inch to .500 inch is ideal. Typically, if you are using the pick up that came with the pan you are fine.

Hope this helps!

Best,
Ryan

Correct!

Can you link me the oil pump? Just want to make sure it has the same installed height as the stock unit. It should but it does not hurt to double check.

Ryan

Yeah should be fine, but you can look in your bottom oil drain bolt and see if there is about a half inch gap.

Hello Ryan. So, I was wondering if you may know what distributor will be a good one to go with the setup that I have? Will the MSD be a good one to run?

Sorry for the delay in my answer, I have been at my best friend's wedding out of town all weekend. I just got back today.

Love all the MSD stuff. I have spoken with a guy that worked at MSD and he said their Street Fire line is budget friendly but works the exact same as their top of the line. I have one in my Camaro and love it. Just make sure you get one for a SBF and that the gear on your camshaft is compatible with the gear on your distributor.

Best,
Ryan

Congrats to your buddy’s wedding and also, I want to thank you for answering all my questions about my build I highly appreciate it couldn’t do it without you. So, I have this MSD distributor which I was wondering if it’s a good one to run for the setup I went with.

No problem! That is what I am here for! Thank you!

So that depends if you are running EFI on your build. That unit has a computer controlled advance curve which is cool but you need the right computer. If that is what you are running, then this unit is perfect!

Hey great question! I had to look it up because off the top of my head I would had said up. But past me said this https://youtu.be/DVVW_mgo1YE?t=192 face down. So, I would have read that out of the directions that came with the heads so that is got to be it. You might want to double check yours just in case they changed it for some reason although I do not see why they would. Thanks for using 2CarPros!

Best,
Ryan
