So you have a 2006 not a 2016 ion? Also next time it does it just play with shifter release button instead of moving the shifter and see if key turns off? Most likely you have a bad shift interlock micro switch. Really common on those cars I have replaced alot of them on those cars for the key not turning off. Its a factory part only. Let know I have the part number they sell them on ebay.

Without me actually looking at it all I can say is it sounds like a bad shifter interlock micro switch at the base of you shifter. Thats the most common thing I have seen cause that on those cars.

You have to remove the center console then you can get the solenoid/switch combo out to replace it. Are you good at taking things apart and putting them back together again?

Yes when I watch closely when I take things apart. Is this a big job how long it take to replace the shifter interlock micro switch?

I would pull the console first make sure the micro switch is being pressed properly by the shifter assembly to make sure thats not sticking/hanging up somewhere before changing the switch.
