2014 Hyundai Other about gear shift

Am having hyundai xcent. I used to change ma gear as per the indication shown in the meter console, at right time i used to up shift and down shift without making the engine to strain. Should i ignore it and change gears according to my wish.with out knocking the engine?
Is it necessary that i must follow that patteren so that i will get good efficiency in fuel.

The up shift light is designed to help you get the best fuel mileage. However, it doesn't need to be followed. Different acceleration needs will require different shift points. Just don't over rev the engine.
