2014 Hyundai Other about gear shift

Am having hyundai xcent. I used to change ma gear as per the indication shown in the meter console, at right time I used to up shift and down shift without making the engine to strain. Should I ignore it and change gears according to my wish. With out knocking the engine?
Is it necessary that I must follow that patteren so that I will get good efficiency in fuel.
