Car was sitting in garage and I heard a small motor/pump running......after searching, seemed to be coming from gas tank area....I unscrewed the gas cap,,,,motor stopped and heard a vacuuming sound .......????

Sounds like one of the emissions self-tests was running and you interrupted it.
