We need a lot more information than that. Is it a front or rear-wheel-drive? Why can't you list the make, model, and engine size? Knowing the mileage can help in determining if something broke due to wear or if a relatively new part was defective. Are there any unusual noises?
As a guess, you have a front-wheel-drive car, a cv joint broke, and that half shaft is spinning freely. When that happens, the other side won't drive that wheel either and the car won't move.
