Why is my engine hot enough to make rain evaporate

When its raining steam comes off the bonnet

Normal. Your bonnet gets hot from the engine underneath. The water evaporates and condenses in the air causing steam.

As long as your temperature gauge does not go past 3/4 hot, I would not worry about the steam.
