What is the difference between gas and diesel motors.

I'm looking to buy new car. Much difference between the two as far as routine maintenance or future mechanical problems? Maintenance costs over and above warranty coverage? Thank you.

Diesels get better fuel mileage but can be harder to start in cold weather. Oil changes are more critical on diesels and they use special oil that is usually more expensive. Newer diesel models often require you to keep a tank filled with a special additive.
