Basically a turbo is an exhaust gas driven air pump, expanding exhaust gasses exiting the engine drive the impeller which in turns drive the induction impeller boosting induction pressure, there is a waste gate that is preset to dump excessive boost pressure when it reaches a predetermined setting, the increased volumetric efficiency increases engine power, that is it in a fairly basic format.
