Car has started making an awful sound when it's started from a "cold" state. Runs fine otherwise. Belts have been checked and oil was changed to a synthetic oil, but still making a noise. It only happens when the car is cold. Could it be a timing belt/chain issue and if so, is it worth fixing if the rest of the car is in good shape? I understand that "fix" could be very expensive.

Is this noise when cranking on the key or after it has started?

It just happens when I turn the key over to crank it, yes. It sounds like a really loud rattling type of noise. Not a squeal or a thump necessarily. Does that help at all?

Sounds starter related, look at faulty starter, worn ring gear, loose drive plate, start here.
