I got a brand new 2011 GMC Sierra (5.3L V8) and have put first 3000 miles. I'm wondering if it's better to do an oil change now (being a new motor) or it's okay to do that at 6000 miles or so, which the manual says. Appreciate your input.

Personally, I would change it at 3000, but then I perform all changes at 3000 mile intervals. The manufacturers are trying to get maintenance costs lower than their competitors to sell more car. They push things to the very limits with only the warranty period in mind. My personal opinion is that 6,000 is too long for any vehicle unless it's using synthetic oil..
