This car has retired . It may see 8 miles a week. Do I still follow oil life indicator or does the car need a oil change every six months or one a year.

I always recommend every 3K miles or once per year. Since the model year requires Dexos oil, which is a semi-synthetic, you can go up to 5K miles before a change.

Six cylinder front wheel drive automatic.

Where is the location of the oil filter on my car listed above? It is the LT model with a 3.5L v6 engine.

The oil filter is located on the opposite side of the engine from the oil plug. Look under the car from the side and locate the oil plug (middle of engine next to transmission pan). Once you see the oil plug, exactly on the other side of the engine (front of car) is the oil filter. You cannot see it unless you crawl under the car. You will need to get the socket type oil wrench to get it off. Oil filters are suppose to be hand tight but some people get carried away. You will need to bring the front of the car up high enough to get under it to get to the filter. Remember safety and use good ramps.

Engine Mechanical problem
2000 Chevy Impala 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Now I have a 04 cavalier and I just changed the oil in it and the filter for it is on the top of the motor, kind of a nice place to have it I think. Now I'm working on my girlfriends car and it was starting to get dark but I looked up on the internet and one guy said that it is located behind the passenger side wheel towards the firewall, now I looked there and didn't see anything. It has the 3400 sfi series in it. But I looked all over the place but I couldn't get underneath it b/c the place that I'm renting I don't have the space for all of my tools. So I just have the basics. No ramps, only jack is the emergency one and no jack stands. But is the filter accessable from the side of the car or is it one of the ones are are only able to be reached from underneath the car?

Update. I have found the oil filter. With the 3400 series motor the oil filter is on the front of the motor (bumper side) and it is underneath the air condition pump. It should be accessable from underneath the vehicle.

My oil filter will not stay in tack. Something keeps pushing it out along with all the oil. And there is water in the oil.

I would recommend having the cooling system pressure tested for leaks. You might have an intake manifold gasket leaking internally.

I change my own oil and filters, I changed the oil and filter roughly a month ago. The other day I was driving and the low oil pressure light came on, I pulled over and popped the hood to find oil sprayed all over the radiator and fan.

I got the car home and discovered the leak was coming from around the filter. I removed the filter and found a small indentation in the gasket. Thinking this may have been the sourced of the leak, I replaced the filter. I started it up with the new filter and there was still a substail leak. I removed the filter and it appeared the part of the gasket had been almost blown off when started. I replaced the filter one more time and got the same result. The leak is very bad, if I were to leave the car running for more than 30 seconds all of the oil would probably drain out.

The picture shows the last filter I pulled off. The filter was only on to start the car up, not driven anywhere. On the back side you can see how the gasket has been pulled out of its seat. I cover the gasket with oil before putting it on the car. I've changed many filters and never had this happen with the gaskets before.

What could be causing the gasket it to do this and is it easily repariable?

I dont think the picture went through I tried twice.

I have only seen it once before, on a new BMW! What happened in his case was Jiffy lube did not check the block to see if the old gasket was still suck on it, and it was! Double check for the old gasket from the previous filter! If nothings there, the pressure relief valve is stuck.

Go to Autozone and grab an oil pressure test gauge, I know it leaks, but try a quick reading. If the valve is stuck some GM's have a little tit sticking out near the filter with a screw end on it, the relief valve is in there. The spring may have broke.

I can't locate anything around the filter that matches what you are describing is it possible that the relief valve is in the oil pump?

Yes, if it can't bee seen on the outside, you;ll have to test the pressure, then if it's too high, change the pump.
