It was making a ticking noise when trying to accelerate and also during acceleration it ( the car) was losing power. Then it cut off . When I popped the hood smoke appeared to be coming from the motor but the ticking noise seemed to be coming from driver side underneath

If you are losing power, it almost sounds like the catalytic converter may be plugged and you are hearing a ticking from a leak caused by excessive exhaust pressure. Check that and let me know what you find.
