We were having intermittent problems with our Mazda Tribute and the Check Engine light came on. We drove it into a Mazda dealership to have the problem diagnosed. Based on the code they pulled from the system and their diagnostic check, the dealership is telling us that we need to have all six ignition coils replaced as well as the spark plugs. This doesn't sound right as I would think the car would not run if all of the ignition coils were bad.

your problem is that with a lot of these cars you can't just replace 1 coil because it makes another one go bad. So they replace them as a set. It has to do with the distributor less ignition system it causes different resistance when only one coil is replaced so the computer can't read it right. Also because of the computer shutting down different cylinders for better fuel mileage on eway is also another reason. Also due to your mileage your plugs should be changed because they will set up different resistance as well. It 's a hard bullet to bite because of cost but better for trouble free driving in the long run...... I hope that explains it in layman terms for you.
