First, make sure the transmission fluid is clean and full.

Since you mentioned the check engine light turns on, I would recommend scanning the computer for diagnostic trouble codes. In this case, the can-bus would be the best thing to scan.
CAN stands for controller area network. Basically, all the different modules are tied together via a few wires. This type of scan will retrieve codes regardless of the module storing them.
