Don't ask how, but a piece of the handle of a disposable fork made it into my gas tank (the piece was maybe 1/4"x1/8" at most). Will this simply dissolve over time or is there a chance of it ever making it to the engine?

It will likely melt since plastic is a petroleum product but it won't get into the engine. Assuming it does melt at the worst it will make its way through the strainer, pump, filter, and injectors as a liquid and will go right out the tail pipe. If it doesn't melt it will get stuck under the strainer in the tank and it won't even get into the pump.
