My van will build temp to a little over a quarter of the way then when you start to drive the temp drops all te way down. What could be the problem

check coolant level first if low fill it, then have gauges checked for a bad dash

The thermastat is stuck open, when the engine just sits there and runs it builds up heat and the guage will go up, when you drive the coolant circulates fast then it cools off and the temp drops.
