should the airbag system works when the car hits from the back or not ?

My friend was driving his car when the road in front of him stopped because of accident so he stopped his car and suddenly a lorry from the back come and crach with his car and the air bag system did not work .
is it normal that the air bag system does not work when the hit or the crach come from the back of the car?

It should activate whether its a bang on the front or rear that's the idea behind it-have it scanned for code/s also is the ABS light lit before the bang-if so its inoperative-won't come on-

Air bags are for frontal or side impact if equipped with side air bags.

Sensors attached to front or side of vehicle should detect impact before the air bags are deployed.
