2009 Mercury Milan Driving Car Sudden Alot Smoke Started Coming Out Pipe

I was driving my car and all of a sudden alot of smoke started coming out the pipe and it started ticking. the ticking only lasted a few seconds. i pulled over and waited about 10 mins to drive again and it did fine. no smoke or no ticking. whats would cause it to do that?

what pipe??? what color smoke????? did it overheat??? is the check engine light oon???
